In a question of whether efficiency should be prized over fighting against cumbersome medical ethical concerns and heavy processes, Herpes vaccine company, Rational Vaccines has vowed to adhere to follow FDA guidelines for future clinical trials. Herpes is a prevalent and incurable disease found in every 1 in 2 people.
Circumventing the FDA to create Herpes vaccines, vaccine company Rational Vaccines vows to comply in the future
As reported on CNBC, Rational Vaccines conducted clinical trials for a Herpes vaccine in 2016 without monitoring by FDA or any other traditional body according to CNBC. This has sparked off fury after some critics criticized the company for its unethical practices and said “people can die“.
On the flip side, patients who have gone through the trial said that Halford (the Chief Scientific officer who was conducting the trials and fighting Cancer at the same time) “gave him his life back” as he stopped the frequency of chronic Herpes outbreaks that some sufferers had prior to the trial. You can watch feedback from actual trial participants who are grateful to Halford and feel indignation over the media’s portrayal of Halford as an unethical scientist and researcher on YouTube.
Peter Thiel was also mentioned as a vocal critic of the FDA and how drugs such as the polio vaccine would not have been invented in today’s regulatory environment and landscape. For clinical trials, there are often fatal casualties as well and we feel that there has not been extensive and transparent disclosure of the various results of clinical trials, even those which are monitored under the purview of FDA or any other IRB (Institutional Review Board).
Chief of Rational Vaccines, Fernandez mentioned that he stands by his friend, Halford, as he was trying to drive real change and eradicate Herpes from the world.
Is monitoring always the most efficient way to ensure real cures are being built and researched? Unless there is complete and transparent clinical data, we will never really know this answer. There must be responsibility from all relevant stakeholders to drive real change in the medical industry, and the government should disclose relevant news and results as well.
Fighting despite knowing that he might be faulted by the industry…
At CuraHOPE, we stand with Dr. Halford, who wanted to fight for change, and went ahead with his research despite knowing there could be backlash and criticisms from the industry. While we understand that there could be risks, we also know that billions of people in the world can be living more confident lives.
